SUPPORTING THE JOURNEY TO UK MEDICAL PRACTICE
One of MANSAG’s key missions is to support Doctors of Nigerian heritage in successfully entering and progressing within the UK medical system. A crucial step for many International Medical Graduates (IMGs) is navigating the Professional Licensing Examinations, such as the PLAB (Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board) Exam, and adapting to new requirements like the Medical Licensing Assessment (MLA).
This page provides guidance on exam preparation, practical steps for registration, and career progression after obtaining your license.
PREPARING FOR THE PLAB EXAM
The PLAB exam is currently the most common route for IMGs to demonstrate that they have the knowledge and skills required to practice safely in the UK. It consists of two parts:
- PLAB 1: A written, multiple-choice exam (180 single best answer questions) assessing clinical knowledge and application.
- PLAB 2: An Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) testing communication, practical skills, and clinical reasoning through simulated scenarios.
PREPARATION PLAN FOR PLAB
- Understand the GMC Blueprint
- Study the official GMC blueprint, which outlines the knowledge, skills, and behaviours expected of doctors in the UK.
- Resources
- Use question banks (e.g., PLABable, Passmedicine, or other reputable sources).
- Engage in peer study groups (MANSAG supports networking opportunities).
- Practise clinical scenarios with peers or through PLAB-focused academies.
- Time Management
- Allocate at least three to six months for PLAB 1 preparation depending on prior knowledge.
- For PLAB 2, plan for at least six to eight weeks of structured practice, ideally in the UK.
- Mock Tests and Feedback
- Take timed practice exams under exam-like conditions.
- Seek feedback from colleagues or mentors.
- Wellbeing
- Balance preparation with rest and mental health care. MANSAG recognises that the journey can be stressful and offers welfare support.
THE NEW MEDICAL LICENSING ASSESSMENT (MLA)
From 2024 onwards, the GMC has introduced the Medical Licensing Assessment (MLA), which will gradually replace PLAB. The MLA ensures a consistent standard for all doctors practising in the UK, whether trained locally or internationally.
MLA STRUCTURE
- AKT (Applied Knowledge Test): Multiple-choice exam similar to PLAB 1.
- CPSA (Clinical and Professional Skills Assessment): Practical OSCE-style exam similar to PLAB 2.
TRANSITION FROM PLAB TO MLA
- IMGs sitting PLAB before the full transition can continue under the PLAB system.
- New applicants will need to register for the MLA when it is fully implemented.
For up-to-date guidance, always check the GMC website.
APPLYING FOR JOBS AFTER LICENSING
Once you have passed PLAB or MLA and obtained GMC registration, the next step is applying for posts within the NHS.
STEPS TO APPLY FOR NHS JOBS
- Create an account on NHS Jobs or Trac Jobs.
- Prepare your portfolio, including:
- CV tailored to NHS roles.
- Evidence of clinical experience and references.
- Certificates of PLAB/MLA, IELTS/OET, and GMC registration.
- Target entry-level posts such as non-training junior doctor (SHO/FY2-equivalent) positions to gain UK experience.
- Network through MANSAG: Attend our workshops, conferences, and mentorship sessions to connect with doctors who have navigated this path successfully.
MANSAG’s ROLE IN SUPPORTING DOCTORS
MANSAG is committed to supporting doctors throughout their journey. During the COVID-19 pandemic, MANSAG raised funds to support doctors who were stranded in the UK without work or financial stability. That spirit of solidarity continues—if you need help, reach out.

PROFESSIONAL AND LINGUISTIC ASSESSMENTS BOARD (PLAB)
The Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board test, or the PLAB test, helps us to make sure doctors who qualified abroad have the right knowledge and skills to practise medicine in the UK. MANSAG can help and support you in passing PLAB. Please contact the education committee for further information. Read more on. https://www.gmc-uk.org/registration-and-licensing/join-the-register/plab
This is to update you all with the outcome of our fundraising efforts to support our colleagues and fellow Nigerians who have been stranded in the UK since March 2020 due to the pandemic. PLAB 2 dates scheduled for March 2020 were cancelled and it is not clear when they will be held again.
Thank you so much for the support and generous donations.
We raised £3959.67 from 73 supporters.
The funds have been distributed to 17 doctors, with details awaited for 2 more. We remain in contact with all the doctors and will continue to support them in whatever way we are able to and aim to offer educational resources and mentoring where needed.
